While you are conferring and teaching strategies in mini-lessons, small groups and individually (Cafe), the Daily 5 (or 3 depending on time) provides a meaningful structure for authentic reading and writing practice for students. We are delighted with the changes we've seen in our K and 1st classrooms since implementing these techniques. There's a very helpful Lucy Calkins video on You-Tube about reading workshop that seems to support this. We're still pretty new to all this but would be glad to learn with you if you want - perhaps by email?Merry Sunshinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04567910020371626779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2658705388001329172.post-7964432197235414632012-08-11T16:59:20.269-04:002012-08-11T16:59:20.269-04:00Activities for word work are numerous: wikki stick...Activities for word work are numerous: wikki sticks, stamps, magazine cutting letters to make words, punch prints, playdough, letter beads and strings, rainbow words using a variety of materials(markers, colored pencils, twistables, colored glue), magnets, letter blocks, word bottles(ricw in the bottle with words and a recording sheet to write them on. Sorry I just labeled my word work shelf in my room, so those are all frsh on my mind.

I think you are in the right idea with making spelling words just a tad harder by adding a blend instead of cvc when they have mastered it.

I too am thinking I am going to be trying to change too much. Implementing daily 5, doing more instruction on drawing pictures in writing, and using dolch word lists to help get my k's further in their reading.

At least we have the blogging world to turn to to help keep us on the daily 5 path once we get started because it seems many people are going to daily 5, so you won't be alone!
Mrs. Shelton's KindergartenHeather Sheltonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12393180140239096513noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2658705388001329172.post-88858933809555823422012-08-11T14:23:32.893-04:002012-08-11T14:23:32.893-04:00Your blog is super cute.
